How do voice and video calls work without a phone number?

Updated 26 September 2026

You can call a match by voice or video straight from the chat; no phone numbers are exchanged, the video preview stays blurred until you have both revealed your photos, and calls are not recorded.

Steps

  1. Open the chat with your match.
  2. Tap the phone icon for a voice call or the camera icon for a video call.
  3. The other person gets a ring and can accept or decline.
  4. To end the call, tap the red button.

The first time, your phone asks for microphone and, for video, camera permission. Ohrny needs these only during a call.

Blur during video calls

The video preview follows the same rule as photos. Until both of you have tapped I'm ready in the chat, the video stays blurred on both sides. After a mutual reveal, the video is clear. If either of you re-blurs later, video calls go back to blurred.

Good to know

  • No phone numbers are involved. Calls go through Ohrny, and the other person never sees your number, even if you signed up with one.
  • Calls are not recorded by Ohrny. Nothing is stored after the call ends.
  • The screenshot shield applies during video calls, so captures are blocked and you are told about attempts.
  • You can only call people you have matched with. Nobody outside your matches can ring you.
  • Not in the mood for calls? Decline, and message instead. There is no penalty for not picking up.
  • If someone behaves badly on a call, hang up and use Block or Report from the chat. Reports are anonymous and reviewed by the safety team.
  • Calls use your internet connection. A weak connection can make video choppy; switching to a voice call usually helps.
  • Calling before meeting in person is a good safety habit. It is an easy way to confirm that the person matches their profile.
