How does the screenshot shield protect my chats?
Updated 26 September 2026
The screenshot shield blocks screenshots and screen recordings inside chats, and if someone tries anyway, you are told about the attempt.
How it works
- Inside a chat, the screen is protected. A screenshot or screen recording comes out blank or black instead of showing the conversation and any revealed photos.
- When a person tries to capture a chat, the other person gets a note in that chat saying that a screenshot was attempted.
- The shield is on for everyone in every chat. There is no setting to turn it off, for you or for the other person.
Why it matters
Photos on Ohrny are revealed only after both people agree, and only inside a chat. The shield makes sure that what you reveal there stays there. It also protects your messages, including disappearing messages, from being kept as an image.
Good to know
- The shield covers chats and the revealed photos shown in them. It does not cover your own profile screens while you are editing them, since those are only visible to you.
- The shield blocks the phone's built-in capture. It cannot stop someone from photographing their screen with a second device. That is why the reveal is mutual and why you can re-blur at any time.
- Being told about an attempt does not give you the picture, because the capture was blocked. It simply lets you know the other person tried, so you can decide how to continue.
- If someone keeps trying, you can re-blur, unmatch, block or report them from the chat. Reports go to the safety team and are anonymous.
- Video calls follow the same protection rules as chats.
- Some phones show a system message when a capture is blocked. That message comes from the phone, not from Ohrny, and is normal.
